Inspection of lightning protection systems

INTRODUCTION

The Lightning Protection System (LPS), has been developed to prevent or minimise damage in lightning strikes. This installation can consist of an external lightning protection system that protects against a direct lightning strike, or an internal lightning protection system that protects against power surges in the vicinity of an impact.

NEN 1014 / NEN-EN-IEC 62305

The NEN 1014 and NEN-EN-IEC 62305 standards lay down what the construction, maintenance and inspection of these lightning protection systems must comply with. The activities mentioned in this product sheet concerns the 'Inspection' section of the external lightning protection system.

The purpose of the inspection is to check whether the lightning protection system (still) complies with the technical regulations and safety regulations. The regulations define the standards to be met by the lightning protection system. In addition, it describes how defects, which may arise after commissioning, are detected. These defects may impede operation or cause a source of danger.

The inspection of lightning protection systems in the operating phase will check that the standards applicable to the installation are met. The inspection will be carried out based on the inspection requirements as described in the relevant standard.

INSPECTION METHODOLOGY

The inspection methodology used depends on the year of construction based on the regulations of NEN 1014 Chapter 11; Inspection and maintenance or NEN-EN-IEC 62305-3 Chapter 7; Maintenance and inspection of an LPS and is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RvA - Raad voor Accreditatie). Thus, the client is assured of an expert approach and an independent and honest execution. In addition, this methodology is laid down in a quality system and associated technical reference works. Independent content experts of the RvA assess the accredited activities annually.
