Fire detection and fire alarm systems

INTRODUCTION

To check whether a fire detection and fire alarm system operates according to the legal requirements, we carry out checks in accordance with the NBN S 21-100-1 standard.

Both the initial (commissioning) checks and periodic checks are carried out here.

SCOPE

The service is carried out in accordance with the legal provisions and the general Bureau Veritas procedures.

The NBN S 21-100-1 standard "Fire detection and fire alarm systems" applies to systems consisting of at least 1 detector or 1 manual fire detector, in order to send out signals in the event of a fire that can turn on auxiliaries (such as fixed fire extinguishers) or generate other actions and preventive measures (such as stopping a machine).
The checks are carried out on the fire detection and fire alarm systems in, for example, elderly facilities, tourist accommodation, hotels, childcare, industrial buildings, apartment buildings.

STANDARD CONTENT

NBN S 21-100-1 and the applicable fire regulations serve as a basis. The fire regulations depend on the type of building and its location. The inspection of fire detection and fire alarm systems is carried out under ISO 17020BELAC accreditation.

INSPECTION PROCESS

In order for the inspection to proceed smoothly, we ask you to make the following items (non-exhaustive list) available before the start of the inspection:

  • configuration list
  • general building plans (with all components such as push buttons, sirens, detectors, short circuit insulators) and locations where specific risks are present
  • identifying the fire compartments
  • information about the controls (such as lifts, HVAC, ...)
  • ATEX zoning plan if present
  • identify the transmission type, if any (fire brigade or control room).

The Bureau Veritas inspector will check the following matters during his on-site check:

  • verifying the correspondence of the configuration list with the actual programming of the fire station
  • checking all materials/components on EN 54 series conformity
  • checking the power cable and power source
  • testing the transmission, if any,
  • testing the detectors, fire detectors, sirens and controls
  • checking and performing measurements on the emergency power supply (batteries)

Both the fire detection system to be checked and the accesses to the premises of the entire building, or buildings to be examined, must be easily and safely accessible to the inspector for the entire duration of the check. After the inspection, an inspection report is always delivered with an indication of whether or not things are compliant according to the NBN S 21-100-1 standard. The inspection report contains a decision, based on the investigation, type of inspection, requirements, type of installation (level of supervision imposed), administrative and technical check inspection points, equipment check and measurements of the fire station(s), zones, equipment and operation, command controls, device notification, measurements, determinations/infringements, and notes.

ADDITIONAL STANDARDS

If desired, we can carry out the following related checks, such as:

  • checking the emergency lighting
  • checking the low voltage system
  • checking the high voltage installation
