EN 1090-1: Mandatory CE Mark for Structural Metallic Components
What is EN 1090-1?
EN 1090-1 is the harmonized standard in the framework of the implementation of the Council Directive 89/106/EEC introducing the mandatory CE mark of structural components. This harmonized standard applies to the design and manufacturing of components and structures made of steel and aluminum for the execution of structures.
Compliance with this standard must be met by July 1st 2012 in order to affix the CE mark on products, required to commercialize (buy/sell/install) structural metallic components used in the execution of structures in the European Economic Area. (European Commission Communication 2010/C 344/01).
Which products are involved?
EN 1090-1 requires conformity assessment of performance characteristics for structural steel and aluminum components used in the execution of structures as well as for kits placed on the market as construction products. This includes components that have structural characteristics which make them fit for their particular use and structural characteristics which are governed by the design and manufacturing of components. This also includes series and non-series structural components used in composite steel and concrete structures.
How to be in compliance?
Structural metallic component manufacturers for products used in the execution of structures are required to have an independent notified body such as Bureau Veritas assess conformity to EN 1090-1. When compliance is achieved, Bureau Veritas will deliver a certificate of Factory Production Control which allows your company to affix the CE marking.
